Following last summer vacation’s academic visit to our sister school in mainland China, Zhengzhou University—led by Department Chair Professor Hao-yi Chu, where students explored historical and archaeological sites in ancient capitals such as Kaifeng, Luoyang, and Anyang—the Department of History at Fo Guang University continued its international engagement this year. From May 6 to 12, under the leadership of Professor Yi-chun Yeh, a delegation of faculty and students visited another of our sister schools in mainland China, Dongguan City University. During the trip, they toured the ancient village of Xixi in Liaobu town, Dongguan, Museum of Agar Culture of China, the Guangdong Museum, the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall in Guangzhou, and the Sea World Culture and Arts Center in Shenzhen—places where tradition and modernity intertwine. Students were able to directly connect their academic knowledge with real-world historical artifacts and sites. Through this journey of “walking ten thousand miles” together, they also gained deeper insight into contemporary cultural and creative industries, as well as the emerging “chaowan” (trendy toy) brands. All participants expressed that the trip was deeply rewarding. The Department places great emphasis on both field study and textual reading, providing students with a solid academic and practical foundation. We will continue to organize such activities regularly in the future.
